Phone Applications Every York University Student Needs

We're living in a day and age where we can do just about anything with technology! That's why I thought I'd make a blog about the phone apps every York University student should have:

1. York University Recreation App:

 

This app is brand new and has a ton of fitness features any gym goer needs. From checking the operation hours on a particular day, or to find out about any cancellations this app has it all!

2. York University Safety App:

This is also a new app which allows you to have all of our safety resources at your finger tips. You can get goSafe's number for those late night classes, call York security directly from the app, and even get directions from one building to another! I think it's much more than just a "safety app" which is why I think every student should download it. 

3. York University Bookstore "Sell Your Textbooks" App

This is a super simple and super easy app to use! It essentially gives you access to a bookstore marketplace which makes it easier to sell your used books. Additionally you can hold up your used book to "scan" the bar code which then lets you know how much money you can get from the bookstore for your used book. Get more information here. 

4. UBC Schulich School of Business App 

Although the app is indeed made for Schulich students, anyone can download and it has resources any York student can use. This app is provided by the Schulich School of Business and the Undergraduate Business Council, and sponsored by the CGA. It provides access to events, news, and a directory of services on campus! How To: Get Textbooks for Your Classes

Textbooks. You got into your classes and stuff, but what about textbooks?! Well, luckily you don't have to think too much about textbooks till September, but how does one even find their textbooks? Where do you get them? What textbooks do you need for that Introduction course?

This might be your stack of textbooks for the year!

Scholar Dollars

Did you know that York University has a rewards program? Just like retail stores which allow you to collect points to redeem for items, the bookstore in collaboration with yu-card are doing the same! They are offering Scholar Dollars!

What are Scholar Dollars?
Scholar Dollars is free money you get whenever you use your yu-card to make a purchase at the bookstore. These scholar dollars get accumulated, and you can use them to buy stuff at the bookstore!

Your yu-card = free money!

How much Scholar Dollars do I get for a purchase? 
Scholar dollars are rewarded at a rate of:
- 5% on purchases with tax
- 5.38% on purchases with 13% tax
- 4.76% on purchases without tax
Therefore, if you buy $100 worth of textbooks with your yu-card at the bookstor, you will get $5 scholar dollars for free. Those $5 scholar dollars can later be used to purchase notebooks, pens, york sweaters, anything and everything at the bookstore!

How do I use my YU-Card to make a purchase at the Bookstore? 
In order to use your yu-card to buy stuff, you need to first put money onto your yu-card! You can put money onto your yu-card through 2 ways:
1. Online: log in, and add money with a credit card (your parents can also add money for you through the guest deposit option)
2. YU-Card Station: theses are machines around campus, which allow you to deposit money onto your card using 5, 10, and 20 dollar bills. Yu-card stations can be found at: Bronfman Business Library, Osgoode Hall Law Library, Scott Library (1st and 2nd floors), Steacie Science Library, William Small Computing Commons, William Small Centre – Room 200 (YU-card office). 

BONUS: When you redeem one Scholar Dollar, you'll get $1 off your purchase! Redeem 100 Scholar Dollars on a single purchase and the Bookstore will give you a bonus $100 gift card! $200 in savings!

Therefore deposit money on those yu-cards, and make sure you use your yu-card to purchase your textbooks this September! There is a lot of free Scholar Dollars out there to be gained and saved up. Not sure what textbooks you need to get for your classes? Be on the lookout for my next blog post!

Checked the location of classes... Check
Got my textbooks... Ch.... wait...... oh no... I DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET MY TEXTBOOKS?!

Have no fear... I... AM... HERE!

Finding out what textbooks you need, and how to get them is super easy!

First you want to get out your timetable, and go over to the bookstore website. At the top left corner you will see it says textbooks!

Once you get to textbooks, it will take you to a page where it gives you different options. If you want to find out what textbooks you need for your classes, go over to "print your course list".

When you go over to "print your course list" you will be able to put in your course names, and codes, and it will generate all your textbooks you need for school! 

When you know what textbooks you need, you can print off the list and visit the bookstore for textbooks both new and used. I usually get my textbooks second week of school, when the textbook list is official but it's up to you how you want to do it!

Also, an awesome thing that the bookstore has started this year, is a rewards program! The way it works:
- If you put money on your YU-CARD (student card), and then purchase your books with the student card you earn SCHOLAR DOLLARS!
- You automatically earn 5% or more back in SCHOLAR DOLLARS!
- These SCHOLAR DOLLARS can be collected and used to purchase any merchandise in the bookstore!
- They also have a bonus offer! If you collect up to 100 SCHOLAR DOLLARS, and you redeem them all on a single purchase, the bookstore will give you a $100 bookstore gift card!

Therefore I would totally recommend toping up your yu-card with money, and then using that to purchase your books because you will get some awesome SCHOLAR DOLLARS!
