Commuting... IT ISNT BAD!

I remember the summer before my first year at York University. I was uber upset about being a commuter! The idea of living on residence, and having the "on campus experience" was so appealing. Unfortunately, costs and the fact that I lived close enough prevented me from getting that opportunity.

I know I'm not the only one! Almost everyday I hear students say "unfortunately no", when asked whether they would be living on campus or not. However I am here to say... ITS NOT BAD! Want to know why? York University has provided me with so many opportunities that I can definitely say I had the "on campus" experience during my first year!

Clubs, sports, college councils, and working on campus have all contributed to what I call "the best first year experience possible" and it was all while being a commuter!

Don't believe me? These pictures show all the fun stuff I got a chance to do ON CAMPUS during my FIRST YEAR! ;)

The week that started it all! Vanier Frosh Week 2009!

My RAGE DODGEBALL team!

Rage dodgeball in action!

Vanier College Council! I joined as a First Year Rep

On campus event: SKATING!

ROCKCLIMBING hosted by my college

End of year FORMAL!
As you can see, you can have just as much fun as resident students even if you are a commuter. In fact... being a commuter, you get extra benefits like getting your laundry done and having your lunch made ;)

Now go out there and find some clubs, and councils you want to be involved with!!!

Another Benefit of Being Involved: You Get Your Picture on the YorkU Website

No... I'm not a model, I don't "know the right people", and I didn't bribe anyone. I'm just involved.

Recently the York University website got a brand new update with new tabs, and different look. On top of that they added a new picture of past RED Zone ambassador Ali and I!

Natural born models right?
Never would I ever have thought I would be on the York University website, but I guess that's just one of the perks of being involved. I'm not saying all of you who become involved will be on the website one day, but there are many people who are involved, and are gracing the covers and pages of York University pamphlets and booklets! Pretty cool stuff.

That picture was also taken over a year ago and I did not expect to see it being used after so long, but I guess you never know whats going to happen! Don't let your 4 years fly by everyone: get involved! :)

Let's Get Physical... Physical!

Yea. Let's get physical. What kind of physical? I'm talking about running, working out, swimming, dancing, stretching, lifting, punching, everything and anything that has to do with moving your body! Even if your not super into working out, there is something out there for you to get your body moving, and staying healthy!

Here at York we have a ton of services, and facilities that are here to make it easier to fit in some physical activity into our busy schedules as students!

Tait McKenzie Gym

This is the go to place for fitness, with a majority of services being housed here! Some of the services they have are:

Fitness Centre: This is 11,000 square foot room you will find 45 cardio machines and 23 selectorized machines and free weights! Access to the fitness centre costs only $15 for the whole year (crazy, I know)! On top of that the hours are amazing because from Mon-Fri it is open 6am-10pm during the school year! For more information click here.

Fitness Centre
Swimming Pool: An awesome 25 metre long swimming pool for your swimming pleasure. There are lane swims usually 3 times during the day (so you can go when is best for you), and don't worry if your not the next Michael Phelps because they divide the swimming pool into different lanes, with each lane being for what speed you go at! It is free to use the swimming pool as a York University student! For times of lane swims click here.

The Tait McKenzie Pool during an event
Basketball, Squash, Tennis Courts: There are 5 North American squash courts, 5 double tennis courts, and 2 basketball courts housed either in the Tait McKenzie Gym, or outside. All these courts are accessible for use during public use time, or when you call in and let them know when you want to use it! There are also baseball diamonds, and outdoor fields that can be used as well, and all the courts are for free as a York University student. For more information on booking a court or field click here.

Fitness Classes: Yoga, Zumba, Muay Thai, Martial Arts, Swimming, Salsa, Pilates, Hip-Hop, and Boot Camp, are just some of the fitness classes you can sign yourself up for! Although not for free, the prices are usually much lower than any where else, and Tait McKendzie does have some free cardio classes. These classes include Cardio Tae Boxing, Cardio Step,  and Total Body Challenge among a few others. For more information on times, and other classes that are offered click here for the recreational guide.

Toronto Track and Field Centre

Inside the Track and Field Centre

This is a go to place for any one who runs and jogs (personally my favourite place to run when the weather isn't great). They have an 8 lane outdoor track and 5 lane indoor track. Access is free for York University students, you just have to print of the list with all your courses, which you can log-in and access here. On top of the tracks there are also jumps, sprint runways, hurdle lane ways, and many other tracks where you will sometimes find professional athletes practising which is pretty cool!

Canlan Ice Centre

One of the most "outstanding arena facilities in North America". With 5 NHL regulation sized ice surfaces, and 1 international sized ice surface, I don't doubt that. Don't worry if you don't play hockey (I don't either), the reason why I'm mentioning this facility is because they do public skating for everyone! You can bring in your own skates, or rent. They also host a "stick and puck" event where you can practise your hockey skills, and they also do an adult shinny! It's only $6 each for one session. For more information click here.

Intramural Sports

Did you know you can play 27 sports throughout the school year for free? Did you also know you don't have to be good at them? At York University we have an Intramural Sports program. The way it works is all 9 colleges compete against each other in 27 sports throughout the year. Every sport is offered in either Tier 1 (more competitive, and more skills required) or Tier 2 (more for fun, no skills required). With so many sports not only do we have all the regular good 'ol sports, but we also have rage dodgeball (dodgeball you play from 10pm-7am) and rock, paper, scissors tournament! It is a lot of fun, and its an awesome, free way to stay active, and play sports or even take up a new sport!

Me and my Rage Dodgball Team!
I didn't play any sports in high school and considered myself very inactive. When I found out about the intramurals I was hesitant to play because I had never played any sports, but luckily some friends persuaded me to come out and play, and I have been playing ever since! Word of advice: do intramurals! You won't regret it! If you are smart enough to listen to me, you'll want to talk to your athletic rep at your college for information on signing up or click here.

Whether you play one intramural sport, or go to the gym every day-  just get physical! It'll make you feel good, help you with stress, and is a great way to get involved. There are also other services that aren't mentioned here, so look around and comment if your looking for something specific!

My Journey To Involvement at York

Back in high school I was not involved in any clubs, organizations, charities, nothing what so ever. As my high school years were coming to an end, I saw University as brand new life. A life where I would be involved with everything I could, meet as many people as I could, and do as much as I could in my limited amount of time here at York.

I spent countless hours searching different clubs at York (even e-mailing a few about how to get involved with them), I remember trying to find out more about this mysterious, and so called "college system" that existed within the parameters of the University, and I even remember looking at the cheer leading and dance teams to find out when they were holding their try-outs (I didn't end up trying out, ending my dreams of staring in the 8th Bring It On).

(real original)

As you can see I was reeeaaalllyyy keen on being involved. I was probably the first one to sign up for frosh week, and dreamed of once being the organizer of this exciting week that I had heard so much about. Once September rolled around, so did my involvement.

Frosh week was a BLAST, and shortly after I found out there were gonna be elections, so I took the risk and ran for First Year Rep for Vanier College Council! Luckily I got it! :)

Me and my good friends who I met thanks to frosh week
(being a little silly in the Vanier College Council office)

Me becoming involved with Vanier College Council was one of the best decisions I made here at York! Through the position as First Year Rep. I met a huge group of amazing people, learned a ridiculous amount (meetings, minutes, constitutions, etc). and thus was the start of Monika becoming an involved student at York (her dream come true)!

My first year flew by (sadly) but it was awesome, and I'm so glad I made the decision to run for Vanier College Council because it sparked a social, and involved life on campus like no other!

Rock Climbing FOR FREE!
In my second year I became Director of Social and Cultural Affairs for Vanier College Council through another election! It was just as awesome as my first year, and I continued to meet more people, and learn more about York! The cool thing is college's run tons of events throughout, and I got to be a part of the planning and participating of all these events!

Me and my council for the 2010/2011 year!

Me and a friend at a York football game!

Me and my team for RADGE DODGEBALL
(ask me if you wanna know more about this sport!)
As my second year came to and end, and the
elections for the following year were approaching I was deciding whether or not to run for council but then I though really hard and decided... OF COURSE! Being on council was a awesome experience so why in the world would I not be part of it for a third year?! Thankfully I decided to do so, because my dream going into University came true... I became the O-CHAIR for Vanier College Council (O-Chair=person planning frosh week).

A group of us on the last day of frosh week!
(Fancy dinner before the legendary boat cruise!)

First year me would have been so proud! Because I was the O-Chair for Vanier, working at the RED Zone came with the job. Therefore not only was I an O-Chair, but was also a RED Zone Ambassador (another dream of mine when I was an incoming student and came to the RED Zone). The summer flew by but as with every year of involvement, I met even more awesome people, got to plan more events, and attend these awesome events. Frosh week was wicked fun, and so was the school year.

Still making silly faces, 3 years after meeting
all because of frosh week! :)
My third year ended off with the legendary, annual, and ever-so-awesome formal, and yes, I do plan on being involved with Vanier College Council for another year! Thanks to my involvement last year with RED Zone, I got the awesome chance to come back again this year and become the RED Zone Assistant Lead (it is truly the best place to work on campus). I know what you are all thinking: why am I telling you this, and why should you care? Well, take it from me: DO NOT LET YOUR 4 YEARS HERE FLY BY! Involvement is the BEST, and with a school with 400 clubs, organizations, and councils HOW CAN YOU NOT BE A PART OF SOMETHING AWESOME?! DO IT!
