Centre for Human Rights

York is a very diverse community. 60,000 students roam the buildings of York every single day, and thankfully no two people are alike. In order to protect each individuals rights and freedoms on campus we have the Centre for Human Rights here at York.

The Centre for Human Rights (CHR) addresses, and resolves issues of discrimination and harassment at York University. They also promote inclusivity and the fair treatment of all! CHR offers services such as early complaint resolution, investigation, and education services. Furthermore they strive to create "positive spaces" all over campus. A positive space is one which commits to the freedom and expression of all individuals regardless of race, colour, sexual orientation, age marital status, etc.

The cool thing is, students and staff can partake in workshops and training. The Centre for Human Rights offers workshops such as:
  • Inclusivity Training
  • Diversity and Social Justice 101
  • Diversity in the Classroom
  • Introduction to Human Rights
  • Positive Space (Level 1)
  • Respect in the Workplace
  • Respect, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity Tutorial (online)
You can get more information, and even sign up for one of these workshops here. I have attended many of these workshops and they are very informative so I totally recommend checking at least one of them out. You learn more about diversity, what it means to be inclusive, and how you can contribute into a safe environment for all at York University.

Lastly, you can contact The Centre for Human Rights with any of your own questions, concerns, or enquiries at 416-736-5682. You can also visit them at the Ross South building, room 327. They even share the RED Zone booth with us sometimes during the school year so stop by if you'd like! :)
Remember: they are a positive space so don't hesitate to reach out to them!
