So You're Gonna Do Summer School...

I'll admit. It's not the most fun thing to be doing during the summer. The weather is nice, people are out having fun, and that 10 page essay is the LAST thing you want to do...

However, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, and there ARE some advantages of doing summer school:
  • You can get ahead, and maybe take less than 30 credits next year? (sounds tempting doesn't it)
  • You can "fix" your marks- that D could turn into a B if you take the time to retake it, and during the summer is the best time
  • A class might be easier during the summer than if you take it during the normal school year. For one, you're able to focus more on 1 or 2 classes (as opposed to 5 or 6), and classes are known to be a bit more condensed in order to fit within the summer months
Intrigued?

The summer term schedule it out now, and depending on your program and year of study you might be able to add classes already.

Remember:
The summer term works a bit differently than the fall/winter term, as there are different "terms" within the summer. So for example:
SU means the class will run from May 5- July 29
S1 means the class will run from May 5- June 15
S2 means the class will run from June 23- August 5
There are a few more "terms" within summer so when adding a course, make sure you look for the code and find out what it means here

I took summer school in the summer 2013 term for the first time, and although there were times when I regretted it, before I knew it, it was over. I believe that if you give your 100% in the classes you take, you'll be happy you took it in the summer, especially when you get to take less classes in the following year!

  1. I'm an international student applying to start school in the summer and i need a student visa which takes 9 weeks to process. So since there are 3 terms within the summer term can i just pick one term? Just like pick S2 term and not have to do the S1 and SU terms? Any sort of reply is appreciated. Please help me.

    Thank You

    1. Yupp, for summer school you can chose to do whichever term you'd like, and as many as you'd like. So if for example you want to do just one course in S2, thats totally fine.

    2. Thank You but just to be clear. S2 term starts on the 23rd of June. So if i chose not to do classes in S1 and SU I can just come over before the 23rd of June and start classes from then?. That's would be a relief. Also on an unrelated topic. Do you have to pay the tuition for the whole year before enrollment? Like my total tuition for a year is $20000. Would the university let me pay like half in Fall/Winter and half during Spring?

      Thanks for the replies.

  2. Yes you're right, if you chose to only do S2 you would not need to be on campus until the first day of your class. In regards to tuition, are you asking about the F/W that just happened (13/14)? If so you would have to pay it all off before enrolling into summer school.

Generally speaking all tuition is due in Sept, except for classes which start in January which are expected to be paid in January. You can get more information about finances here: http://sfs.yorku.ca/fees/paying/
